COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau intercepted a multi-day fishing vessel in the deep southern waters, uncovering one of the largest drug consignments in recent history.
Authorities revealed that the narcotics stash belongs to a notorious trafficker identified as Unakuruwe Shanta, a name long associated with the country’s drug underworld.
The vessel, escorted to the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour last night, carried a staggering 115 kilograms of heroin and 261 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Ice), cleverly concealed in 18 large sacks.
The Navy spokesperson, Commander Buddhika Sampath, confirmed that the raid also uncovered a revolver, a pistol, and two magazines, signaling the violent nature of the operation.
Six fishermen aboard the vessel were taken into custody.
In a shocking twist, police disclosed that one suspect had links to a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) provincial council candidate, who was arrested earlier in Pannala for alleged connections to the same network.
