COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan security forces have uncovered two major narcotics consignments floating in the sea off Bentota and Beruwala.
Police confirmed that over 43 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) were recovered from 41 parcels drifting in deep waters off Beruwala.
The operation was carried out by the Navy following intelligence provided by Western Province North Crimes Division Director Rohan Olugala.
Meanwhile, a separate raid on Bentota beach this morning led to the discovery of 19.85 kilograms of heroin concealed in a parcel.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of the Police Narcotics Bureau after a tip-off.
Authorities believe the narcotics were smuggled into Sri Lanka via multi-day fishing vessels, prompting a decision to tighten security at fishing harbors.
Deputy Minister of Fisheries Ratna Gamagage announced plans to deploy Special Task Force units and police checkpoints at key harbors to curb drug inflows.
