Ex-Mines Bureau Chief Gets Bail In Recruitment Scandal

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Anura Walpola, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, has been granted bail following court proceedings today (17).

Walpola was taken into custody over allegations of unlawful recruitment practices, where several female associates were allegedly appointed to the bureau outside standard procedures.

According to the Bribery Commission, these irregular appointments occurred over a period of one and a half years, causing an estimated Rs.1.2 million loss to the government.
