COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Meteorology says that thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur in Northern, Northcentral, Eastern, Uva and North-western
provinces and in Matale district.
Issuing an advisory for severe lightning, the department said that atmospheric conditions are favorable for thunderstorms in the evening and there may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.
The department forecasts showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m.
Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in Northern, North-central, Eastern, Central and Uva provinces.
Showers may occur at a few places in Western and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts in the morning too.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the sea areas around the island as well.
The department forecasts winds will be south-westerly or variable and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph.
The sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate.
The department said that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Therefore, the general Public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by
lightning activity.
