COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police announced that an investigation has been launched into several officials of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) over allegations of facilitating vehicle registrations using falsified information.
The inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of the Central Crimes Investigations Bureau, following the discovery of eight vehicles registered under fraudulent details.
These vehicles were seized from various parts of the country in recent weeks.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the vehicles were imported avoiding customs clearance and later registered using chassis numbers from older vehicles.
Authorities suspect that this scheme was carried out with the assistance of certain DMT officials.
Police further disclosed that some of the fraudulent data entries were made into the department’s computer systems outside official working hours.
Statements have already been recorded from several DMT officers under court orders, as the investigation continues to uncover the extent of the alleged racket.
