COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Defence has announced that firearms, ammunition, and related equipment belonging to private maritime security companies will now be stored in Sri Lanka Navy armories under strict naval supervision.

The move, communicated to Parliament today quoting a letter from the President, is aimed at enhancing oversight and ensuring the secure management of weapons used in maritime security operations.

In July 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal to authorize the Sri Lankan Navy to independently carry out maritime security operations in key regional ports, under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence.
