Maria Tripodi In Colombo: Trade, Tourism, and Migrant Welfare in Focus

COLOMBO (News 1st); Italy's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Maria Tripodi, met with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, this afternoon (4) at the Ministry premises.

The meeting focused on deepening cooperation between the two nations, with particular emphasis on trade, investment, tourism, migration, and aviation connectivity. Both parties expressed a shared commitment to expanding economic and diplomatic engagement in mutually beneficial sectors.

Minister Herath highlighted Sri Lanka’s recent economic progress, political stability, and the creation of a favorable environment for foreign investment. He also drew attention to the rapid growth of the tourism industry, inviting Italy to play a more active role in promoting travel and cultural exchange.

The discussion also addressed the welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers in Italy, with both sides exploring ways to improve their quality of life and ensure their rights are protected. A key issue raised was the long-standing challenge faced by Sri Lankans in obtaining driver’s licenses in Italy, with attention directed toward finding a practical resolution.
