COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared that his administration will not allow time or political influence to shield criminals from justice.

Speaking at the 159th celebrations of Sri Lanka Police, he emphasized that the failure to solve certain crimes and murders in Sri Lanka is not due to incompetence or lack of dedication within the police force—but rather the corrosive grip of political interference.

“Behind every unsolved crime in our country lies a political hand,” the President stated. “Even the most committed officers have been obstructed, investigations weakened, and in some cases, retaliated against for simply doing their duty.”

He acknowledged the historical pattern where law enforcement officials who pursued high-profile investigations were subjected to intimidation and revenge, creating a culture where doing the right thing became a risk. But he assured the nation that under his leadership, this era of fear and suppression is over.

“I guarantee that under our government, no officer will be punished for doing their job. You must serve the nation fearlessly, for the safety of our people.”

President Dissanayake also rejected the notion that time can cleanse crimes. He criticized the belief that murders and atrocities fade into irrelevance after years pass, calling it a dangerous myth.

He acknowledged the challenges in reopening decades-old cases—missing evidence, faded memories, and destroyed records—but insisted that these obstacles must not deter the pursuit of truth.

“Some criminals believe time will bury their sins. But I tell you, time is no barrier to justice. Our government is committed to delivering punishment without prejudice—regardless of when or where the crime occurred.”

The President placed a solemn responsibility on the shoulders of the current Inspector General of Police and senior investigators, reminding them that the eyes of the nation are upon them.
