President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to Continue Tour in North with New Development Projects

COLOMBO (News 1st): President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is on his second day of visits to the Northern Province today (02), where he is scheduled to inaugurate and launch several new development projects.

This morning, the President is expected to arrive in Mullaitivu, where he will preside over the launch of the National Coconut Cultivation Promotion Programme held in parallel with World Coconut Day. 

The initiative will focus on promoting the “Northern Coconut Triangle” covering Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar districts.

As part of the programme, the first model coconut seed farm in the region will be established in Palai. 

The project aims to cultivate 16,000 acres of coconut in the Northern Province by 2025, with plans to expand to 50,000 acres by 2027.

Later today, the President will also take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Vattuvakal Bridge in Mullaitivu.

On Monday (01), President Dissanayake launched a series of development projects in Jaffna. 

Among them was the commencement of the third phase of the Jaffna–Myliddy Fisheries Harbour Development Project. 

He also laid the foundation stone for the proposed Jaffna–Mannativu International Cricket Stadium in the afternoon.

In addition, the President inaugurated the transformation of the historic Jaffna Public Library into a modern e-library, and officially opened the new Jaffna Regional Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Thereafter, President Dissanayake visited Kachchativu Island, where he engaged with local fishermen and inquired into the challenges they face in their livelihoods.
