COLOMBO (News 1st); A man injured in the Peliyagoda fish market shooting earlier this morning (19) succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the National Hospital, police confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Ayyappan Prabhu, a 45-year-old resident of Aluthmawatha, Colombo 15.
He was one of two individuals wounded in the incident, which occurred around 9:30 AM near the bustling fish market.
According to police, the shooting targeted a fish market employee, believed to be the intended victim.
A second individual, who was traveling nearby on a bicycle, was also injured and remains hospitalized.
Investigators suspect that a T-56 assault rifle was used in the attack.
Preliminary findings point to a long-standing feud between two organized criminal gangs, with the fish market worker caught in the crossfire as part of a deliberate hit.
Multiple police teams have launched investigations into the incident, and further details are expected as inquiries progress.
