COLOMBO (News 1st); Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya will officially assume duties as the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka this morning.
The ceremonial event will take place at the Police Headquarters in Colombo 02, where the new IGP will take over duties in the presence of senior officers and amidst traditional police customs.
Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police Frederick Wootler, says that the new IGP’s assumption of duties was marked with customary police honors and the presence of Deputy Inspector Generals and other senior officials.
Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya received his official letter of appointment yesterday morning from Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
Notably, he becomes the first individual to rise through the ranks of the Sri Lanka Police—from Police Constable, to Sub-Inspector, to Assistant Superintendent of Police—and be appointed as IGP.
