High Court to Hear Bail Plea Filed By SM Ranjith

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith and his relative Shanthie Chandrasekera have filed a bail application before the Colombo High Court, requesting release pending the outcome of their appeal filed at the Court of Appeal.

The application was heard before Colombo High Court Judge Sahan Mapa Bandara.

President’s Counsel Ali Sabry, appearing on behalf of the petitioners, informed the court that an appeal has been submitted to the Court of Appeal challenging the prison sentences handed down to his clients. 

He requested that they be released on bail until a final decision is delivered.

After considering the submissions, the High Court Judge directed that further arguments be presented on August 25.

Shanthie Chandrasekera served as the personal secretary to S.M. Ranjith during his tenure as Chief Minister from September 27, 2012 to December 31, 2014.

She is accused of allegedly using fraudulent fuel orders to obtain over Rs. 2.6 million worth of fuel, while receiving salary and fuel allowances. The charges include influencing public officials and facilitating the misuse of state resources.

The Bribery Commission filed six charges against both individuals, resulting in each being sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Colombo High Court.

The bail application was filed in connection with the appeal against this conviction.
