COLOMBO (News 1st); Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena emphasized the importance of delivering an efficient and effective service through the judicial system, while strengthening public trust in the judiciary.
He made these remarks upon assuming duties as the Chief Justice.
Judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, along with judges from the High Courts, District Courts, and Magistrate Courts, as well as senior legal professionals, were present at the occasion where the new Chief Justice officially assumed duties.
Addressing the official ceremony, Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena stated that delivering an efficient judicial service is essential to strengthening public trust in the judiciary.
He noted that corruption and irregularities occurring in certain court offices could be eliminated through the digitalization of judicial processes.
Therefore, he emphasized that steps are being taken to accelerate the digital transformation of the judicial system, and that the government has committed to providing the necessary resources to support this initiative.
The Chief Justice further stated that he has already initiated discussions with several key stakeholders—including the Minister of Justice and the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka—to ensure the swift implementation of these reforms.
He added that digitalization would offer significant convenience to both the public seeking judicial services and legal professionals.
Expressing pride in having entered the legal profession without a family background in law, Chief Justice Surasena said he was honored to be appointed as Sri Lanka’s 49th Chief Justice.
He extended his gratitude to the President and the Constitutional Council for nominating him to the position.
