COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that the generator number 1 at the Norochcholai coal power plant will be taken offline starting midnight today (13) for scheduled maintenance.

According to CEB spokesperson Dhammika Wimalaratne, the maintenance process is expected to take approximately 25 days to complete.

The temporary shutdown will result in a reduction of 300 megawatts from the national grid, a significant impact on Sri Lanka’s power generation capacity.

In a balancing move, the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Plant, which had been inactive due to maintenance for the past one and a half months, is scheduled to resume operations from midnight tonight.

This reactivation will contribute 165 megawatts back to the national grid.

Wimalaratne further explained that the timing of these maintenance activities was strategically planned, taking into account the current rainy weather conditions, which have improved the potential for hydroelectric power generation.
