COLOMBO (News 1st); The 2025 Asia Rugby Men’s Championship kicked off in spectacular fashion today at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo, with South Korea narrowly defeating hosts Sri Lanka in a nail-biting 38–34 encounter.
This year’s championship serves as a crucial qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, offering Asia’s top teams a coveted path to the global stage.
Led by the seasoned Tarinda Rathwatte, Sri Lanka entered the field with confidence and flair. The Tuskers dominated the first half, showcasing sharp coordination and tactical brilliance to lead 17–14 at halftime.
Sri Lanka extended their momentum into the second half, scoring a well-executed try in the 43rd minute and successfully converting it, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
However, South Korea responded with resilience and precision. Their forwards tightened the game, and their backs capitalized on key opportunities, gradually turning the tide.
The visitors mounted a strong comeback, ultimately sealing the match 38–34.
