Five Remanded After Alleged Assault on Police During Poson Prep

COLOMBO (News 1st); Five individuals have been remanded for 14 days following an alleged assault on police officers near the Beruwala Fisheries Harbor.

The order was issued by the Additional Magistrate of Beruwala after the suspects were presented in court.

The incident occurred on Monday (9) night during preparations for the Poson festival. A group of individuals was reportedly working from a lorry parked near the harbor when a private bus arrived and parked behind it, causing congestion. Police officers passing by advised the group to avoid obstructing the road.

A verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which three police officers sustained injuries and were admitted to Nagoda Hospital for treatment. The suspects, believed to be passengers from both the lorry and the bus, were subsequently arrested.

In response to the unrest, police fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Meanwhile, relatives of the arrested individuals staged a protest in front of the Beruwala Police Station on Tuesday (10), demanding justice and transparency in the investigation.
