COLOMBO (News 1st); A senior assistant controller of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, along with two others, were remanded until tomorrow (6) in connection with the alleged creation of a forged passport for a notorious organized crime figure reportedly hiding in Dubai, known as Kehelbaddara Padme.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali announced that a decision on the suspects’ bail applications will be delivered tomorrow.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), statements have been recorded from nine immigration officers believed to have been involved in the passport issuance process.
Investigators also obtained a statement from the registered owner of the mobile SIM card used to send the photograph for the forged passport.
Further statements were recorded from managers of two private companies responsible for the passport issuance software, as part of the ongoing probe.
Authorities have seized mobile phones and computers from the suspects, which have been sent to the Government Analyst for forensic examination.
Investigators are also reviewing all passports issued by the assistant controller since the beginning of his tenure, to identify any additional irregularities.
A comprehensive forensic audit of the passport issuance system is being planned, with technical support from the University of Moratuwa.
Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to prevent interference, the CID requested that the suspects remain in remand custody.
President’s Counsel Sarath Jayamanne, appearing for the assistant controller, argued that no new evidence had been presented since the previous hearing and requested bail, stating that his client had no ability to interfere with the technical aspects of the investigation.
Attorneys representing the other two suspects also submitted bail applications. After reviewing the submissions, the Chief Magistrate ordered that all three suspects remain in custody until a final decision on bail is announced tomorrow.
