Malini Fonseka’s Last Rites at Independence Square

COLOMBO (News 1st); The final rites of beloved Sri Lankan actress and cultural icon, Dr. Malini Fonseka, will be held this afternoon at Independence Square, Colombo, marking the end of an era in Sinhala cinema.

Her remains will be moved from the Tharangani Hall of the National Film Corporation at 8:00 a.m. today and taken to Independence Square, where the public will be allowed to pay their last respects from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a ceremonial procession led by alumni of Kelaniya Gurukula Vidyalaya and fellow artists will escort the body to a specially prepared platform for religious observances.

The cremation will follow at a specially constructed pyre within the Independence Square premises.

Malini Fonseka passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 78 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. 

Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from across the nation, with thousands visiting the National Film Corporation yesterday to pay tribute.

Among those who paid their respects were President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, former presidents, and a host of artists representing every facet of the creative industry.

Admirers, some tearful and carrying flowers, gathered to bid farewell to the woman affectionately known as the “Queen of Sinhala Cinema.”

Malini Fonseka’s legacy spans decades, with her contributions to film, television, and theatre earning her a revered place in the hearts of Sri Lankans. Her artistry and grace made her not just a cinematic icon, but a living chronicle of the nation’s cultural journey.
