COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has decided to implement several new safety measures for long-distance bus operations.

SLTB Chairman Jeevaka Prasanna announced that for any long-distance journey exceeding six hours, two buses from two different depots will be deployed.

This measure is intended to enhance safety by reducing driver fatigue and ensuring better oversight.

He made this announcement during a discussion held yesterday evening.

The Chairman also noted that the SLTB’s internal investigation into the fatal bus accident that occurred in Gerandi Ella is nearing its final stage.

The accident, which took place last Sunday in Gerandi Ella, Kotmale, involved an SLTB bus plunging into a ravine, resulting in the deaths of 23.

A five-member investigation committee has already commenced its inquiry into the incident.

The committee is chaired by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and legal expert Ajith Rohana.

DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the final report will be submitted after receiving several key documents, including the motor vehicle examiner’s report and the post-mortem report of the deceased driver, along with other scientific findings.

These steps are part of a broader initiative to strengthen the safety protocols of the SLTB in light of recent events and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
