COLOMBO (News 1st) - Foreign exchange earnings from the export of coconut and coconut-based products have exceeded US$1 billion.

The Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development said that, according to Export Development Board data, income from coconut exports reached US$1,033.9 million from January to October 2025, a remarkable 43.83% growth compared to the same period in 2024.

The ministry highlighted that instead of exporting raw coconuts alone, focus has shifted to value-added products.

High global demand has been recorded for items such as coconut milk, coconut oil, coconut cream, desiccated coconut, activated carbon, and coco peat.

Coconut-based products now account for 7.2% of the country’s total exports.

Looking ahead, the sector aims to generate US$2.5 billion in export revenue by 2030.

As part of this long-term strategy, the Northern Coconut Triangle has been established, with plans to cultivate 36,000 acres of new coconut plantations, including 16,000 acres in the initial phase.
