388 Prisoners to Receive Special State Pardon for Vesak Poya Day

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Steps have been taken to grant a special state pardon to 388 inmates across the country in view of the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.

According to the Department of Prisons, inmates will be granted a one-week pardon for each year or part thereof they have served in prison. 

Additionally, the remaining sentences of inmates imprisoned due to unpaid fines will be cancelled.

Prisoners who are over the age of 65 and have completed half or more of their sentence will also be released.

Of the 388 prisoners, 384 are male and 4 are female. 

The pardon applies to inmates across several institutions, including 40 from Welikada Prison, 38 from Wariyapola Prison, 36 from Anuradhapura Prison, and 30 from Mahara Prison.
