COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that recent discussions with the United States regarding tariff issues have been successful.
The positive outcomes of these talks will soon be presented in a joint statement by both nations.
President Dissanayake emphasized the government's ambition to make 2025 a record-breaking year for Sri Lanka's export revenue.
He highlighted that the export figures for January and February have already surpassed previous records. However, a sudden imposition of tariffs in the USA posed a potential threat to several sectors in Sri Lanka, particularly the apparel industry.
To address this, a delegation from Sri Lanka, including the Deputy Minister of Finance, engaged in talks with US authorities. President Dissanayake confirmed that these discussions have yielded positive results, and a joint statement is expected shortly.
The President reiterated the government's commitment to building a resilient economy that can withstand external pressures. He also addressed criticisms and doubts about the government's stability, asserting that the administration remains strong and focused on its goals.
President Dissanayake stressed the importance of the rule of law and the government's dedication to upholding it. He mentioned ongoing investigations into past corruption and wasteful acts, assuring that the government is providing all necessary support to expedite these processes.
