COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Prisons has announced the transfer of 250 inmates from Matara Prison to other facilities following a violent disturbance last night. The decision was made in response to the unrest that erupted within the prison.

During the chaos, inmates destroyed the prison's food storage area.

The disturbance reportedly began when several inmates protested the transfer of close associates of three organized crime figures to another prison. The situation escalated, leading to widespread disorder among the inmates.

In an effort to restore order, prison officials fired warning shots into the air.

The police also deployed tear gas to prevent inmates from breaking out of their wards and attempting to escape.

Additionally, 25 female inmates were transferred to other prisons as a precautionary measure.

Senior police officials confirmed that the Special Task Force (STF) and police have been deployed to secure the perimeter of the prison and ensure the safety of the facility.

An official inquiry has been launched to investigate the incident and determine the exact sequence of events that led to the disturbance.
