COLOMBO (News 1st); Fifteen Sri Lankan nationals have been rescued from cybercrime camps in Myanmar, according to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Myanmar.
The rescued individuals have been transported to the Friendship Bridge at the Thailand-Myanmar border.
These Sri Lankans were previously held captive in cybercrime camps operated by criminal groups in Myanmar. The embassy has confirmed that four more Sri Lankans are still awaiting rescue.
Efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining individuals and ensure their safe return to Sri Lanka.
The cybercrime camps in Myanmar have become notorious for their brutal conditions, where captives are forced to engage in elaborate online scams under threat of violence and exploitation.
These camps are often controlled by armed groups operating with impunity in remote areas, making rescue operations extremely challenging.
