COLOMBO (News 1st) - Health officials have reported a rise in chikungunya cases across the country.

Pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Dr. Deepal Perera, attributed the increase to a higher number of mosquitos during the monsoon season.

Chikungunya, which has symptoms similar to dengue fever, is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.

Dr. Perera urged the public to take extra precautions to reduce mosquito breeding.
