COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake commenting on crime prevention emphasized the alarming extent of criminal infiltration, noting that 73 T-56 rifles had gone missing from a major military camp, with 38 of these weapons already recovered from underworld figures.
The remaining 35 are still believed to be in the hands of criminals.
President Dissanayake described the situation as a "criminal empire" supported by political protection, with certain politicians and small factions within the military and police aiding criminal activities.
He stressed the severity of the issue, pointing out that even regulated firearms were being misappropriated and used for contract killings.
The President assured the public that the government is taking decisive steps to dismantle this criminal network. He mentioned ongoing discussions with the Inspector General of Police, the Special Task Force, and military officials to devise strategies for eradicating crime and restoring order.
President Dissanayake also highlighted the dedication of police officers who continue to work despite threats to their lives, and he announced plans to reward and promote these officers by the end of the month.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to purging the country of crime and drugs, urging the public to remain steadfast and supportive of the government's efforts.
