COLOMBO (News 1st) - In the heart of Panadura, a structure once filled with promise now stands as a symbol of neglect and broken promises.

The Keselwatta Public Market, which was built with an investment of over Rs 50 million in public funds, was initially envisioned as a thriving hub for local vendors.

However, after only a short period of use, the building now lies abandoned and deteriorating, leaving the voices of those who once believed in its potential echoing within its empty walls.

The market, located in Panadura, was designed to support local vendors and provide them with a proper space to conduct their business.

Construction of the market began eight years ago, and for a brief time, it served its intended purpose. Yet, over the years, it has fallen into disrepair and has now become a symbol of the failure to maintain public infrastructure.

The abandoned site raises questions about the use of public funds and the lack of accountability regarding projects that were meant to uplift local communities.

Despite the heavy financial investment, the market remains unused, with no clear plan for its future.

The situation was highlighted during a recent visit by the Kalutara team, part of the Gammadda initiative.

The team visited several villages, including Panadura, Waskaduwa, and Naiduwa, on Friday, January 10th, to witness the neglect firsthand.

The Keselwatta Public Market's state of abandonment stands as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and long-term planning in public projects.

It is a call to action for local authorities to address such issues and ensure that public funds are used effectively to benefit communities.

As Panadura looks forward to the future, one can only hope that this neglected symbol of progress will one day fulfill its original promise, serving the vendors and residents it was intended to support.

Until then, the abandoned market remains a poignant reminder of what could have been.
