COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka Customs has intensified random container inspections, with approximately 2,000 containers arriving daily for clearance.

Of these, around 600 containers are subjected to thorough inspections.

According to Customs, 60% of the inspected containers reveal significant customs violations.

Customs officials have highlighted that limited space in container yards is causing additional challenges. After inspections, efforts are made to promptly release the containers from customs yards.

However, the Association of Container Owners has raised concerns, stating that around 1,000 containers are currently piled up in customs yards, causing severe distress to both owners and importers.

They have called for swift solutions to the ongoing issue.

In response, Customs has assured that they are committed to expediting the release of containers post-inspection.

A senior Customs official also noted that the number of containers arriving daily is gradually increasing.
