COLOMBO (News 1st); Maligakanda Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama has issued an order for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the statement made by former President Maithripala Sirisena regarding the Easter Sunday attacks.
The directive aims to determine whether any criminal offense has been committed.
The case was brought before the Maligakanda Magistrate's Court today, where the CID informed the court that they are concurrently investigating complaints filed by Member of Parliament Kavinda Jayawardena and Civil Rights Movement, related to this incident.
Attorney-at-Law Rajitha Lakmal, representing MP Kavinda Jayawardena, highlighted that during the hearing of fundamental rights petitions before the Supreme Court concerning the Easter attack, Ex-President Maithripala Sirisena was found guilty, and he continues to pay compensation to the petitioners.
The lawyer urged the court to thoroughly examine the veracity of Sirisena's statement.
He noted that if it is determined that he provided false information or concealed relevant facts, he may be held accountable under the Penal Code for violating public justice.
The case is scheduled to be revisited on July 26.
