Court of Appeal Orders Release of Former Medical Supplies Director on Bail

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Court of Appeal ordered the Maligakanda Magistrate to release on suitable bail conditions the former Director of the Medical Supplies Division Dr. Kapila Wickremanayake who is currently in remand custody in relation to the fake medicine scam.

The petition was taken up before the bench presided over by President of the Court of Appeal Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and B. Shashi Mahendran.

The petition submitted by Dr. Kapila Wickranayake states that the order issued by the Maligakanda Magistrate to remand him until the case is over is illegal and therefore demands that the order be nullified.

Accordingly, the writ petition states that the Dr. Kapila Wickremanayake be released on suitable bail conditions.

The Inspector General of Police, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, and the Maligakanda Magistrate have been named as respondents in the petition.

The Petition is scheduled to be called up again on 5 October.
