2243 People Killed in Road Accidents in 2024

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Police say 2243 people have died in road accidents from January 1 to December 13, 2024.

During this period, a total of 22,967 road accidents were recorded, including 2141 fatal accidents, which account for 9% of all incidents. 

Additionally, 6500 serious accidents and 9127 minor accidents were reported.

Meanwhile, five people died and 56 others were injured in road accidents yesterday. 

Three of the victims died when a bus plunged into a precipice in Maliappuwa, Hatton leaving 46 people injured.

Two people were killed in an accident on the Southern Expressway between Baddegama and Pinnaduwa, and six people were injured in a collision between a van and a lorry.

10 people were injured when a bus collided with a tree in Kadugannawa.

The police urge the public to take necessary precautions to reduce accidents, especially during the festive season.
