COLOMBO (News 1st): The Western Provincial Council says that there is still a shortage of over 4,000 teachers in the province.
Chief Secretary of the Western Province, Dhammika Wijesinghe, said that the teacher shortage is particularly severe in the subjects of English, Tamil, and Information Technology.
She pointed out additionally, that there is a shortage of teachers for subjects taught in English medium.
As a solution, the Western provincial council has focused on implementing several proposals, including recruiting a number of graduates with Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degrees from the University of Peradeniya and the University of Colombo into the teaching service.
She also mentioned that some current development officers in schools are planned to be recruited into the teaching service based on their qualifications.
Furthermore, over 3,900 graduates who passed the recent competitive exams have been recruited into the teaching service in the Western Province.
