COLOMBO (News 1st);
US President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, to head a new initiative aimed at reforming government bureaucracy.
The project, called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will focus on streamlining federal operations and cutting waste.
Trump also announced that Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech investor and former Republican presidential candidate, will join Musk in leading the effort.
The acronym DOGE refers to Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, which the president-elect said reflects the initiative’s goal of modernizing government practices.
While DOGE is not an official government department — which would require Congressional approval — Trump said the pair would work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to address inefficiencies in the U.S. government's $6.5 trillion annual budget.
Musk, a major donor to the Trump campaign, has long been speculated for a role in the administration.
Ramaswamy, who dropped out of the 2024 Republican presidential race and endorsed Trump, will assist with the reform efforts.
Trump set a deadline for the project to be completed by July 4, 2026.
