COLOMBO (News 1st): Four former officials of Sri Lanka Customs have been sentenced to 35 years in prison with hard labor by the High Court today, following their conviction on charges of bribery and conspiracy.
The suspects, who were involved in a high-profile case dating back to 2015, were found guilty of solicitating a bribe of Rs. 150 million and receiving Rs. 125 million in exchange for facilitating the release of several container trucks carrying imported vehicle spare parts. These parts were intended for the Ceylon Transport Board (CTB).
The Judge ordered the four defendants to pay the Rs. 125 million as a fine.
Also, According to Section 26 of the Bribery Act if they are unable to pay the fine they will have to serve a further Two years in imprisonment.
