NHK: Japanese lawmakers have just elected Ishiba Shigeru as the country's prime minister.
The Diet voted Ishiba in on Tuesday. His Liberal Democratic Party leads the coalition in control of both the Upper and Lower Houses.
The 67-year-old has held several cabinet roles, including Defense Minister, and served in the LDP executive.
He will be taking up the mantle from the outgoing prime minister, Kishida Fumio. Kishida announced in August he would not run again as LDP party leader in the wake of a political fundraising scandal.
Ishiba will officially form his new Cabinet later on Tuesday. He will then hold a news conference to lay out his priorities and convene his first Cabinet meeting.
Outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's Cabinet has resigned ahead of the appointment of a new Cabinet, which will be led by Kishida's successor, Ishiba Shigeru.
The Kishida administration's Cabinet ministers submitted letters of resignation en masse at a Cabinet meeting, which started shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
