COLOMBO (News 1st) - A public meeting was held in Buttala yesterday to rally support for independent presidential candidate Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

Speaking to the crowd, Fonseka outlined his views on poverty and the political system.

Fonseka criticized the current state of poverty in the country, arguing that small aid packages are insufficient to address the issue. "You can't escape poverty with just a small aid of 2,000 or 3,000 rupees," he said. "This country needs 600,000 to 700,000 rupees worth of prosperity every day. Poverty is increasing every 5 years, and no one currently in power has the intelligence, commitment, or vision to solve this problem."

He also expressed frustration with the political system, noting that opposition parties often come to power not because of their own capabilities, but due to public dissatisfaction with the ruling government.

Fonseka urged voters to use their vote wisely, emphasizing its crucial role in shaping the future of the country.
