Surviving Tangalle Fisherman Brought Ashore After Consuming Sea-Found Bottle

COLOMBO (News 1st); SLNS Vijayabahu brought the critical fisherman of “Devon 5” to the Hambantota harbour this morning (1st July 2024).

Upon arrival, he was rushed to the General Hospital, Hambantota for medical attention.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo coordinated the retrieval of 2 critically ill fishermen on the multi-day fishing trawler “Devon 5”, through the merchant ship ‘MV KOTA CAMIL’ on 30th June 2024.

However, one of the two fishermen has tragically lost his life, while aboard the merchant ship.

The remaining fisherman was transferred to SLNS Vijayabahu on the evening of 30th June, about 170 nautical miles 314km) off Dondra.

The fisherman was administered emergency treatment by the Navy medical team aboard SLNS Vijayabahu, en route to Hambantota.

A crew of six (6) fishermen from Tangalle Fisheries Harbour, who were on a multi-day fishing voyage, fell critically ill after consuming a liquid from a bottle they found floating in the sea.

Unfortunately, 4 fishermen lost their lives at sea, and another died aboard the merchant vessel.
