Sri Lanka Pledges Support at UNCOP: Minister Offers Specialized Units

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka has offered to contribute specialized police units to combat emerging security threats, according to a statement delivered by Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, at the recent UN Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) 2024.

Minister Alles highlighted the growing complexity of global security challenges, including the rise of violent conflicts, the plight of civilians in conflict zones, and the emergence of non-traditional threats like cybercrime and weaponized technology.

He also addressed the concerning rise of organized crime and gang violence, emphasizing their detrimental impact on international peace.

Underscoring Sri Lanka's commitment to international security, Minister Alles expressed confidence in the Sri Lanka Formed Police Unit, which he said is currently at readiness level 3.

During his address, Minister Alles urged the United Nations to consider deploying specialized police units to tackle the growing threat of organized crime and gang violence.

He offered Sri Lanka's expertise by stating the country's willingness to contribute police officers, gendarmerie personnel, and criminal justice professionals with experience in countering such threats. Sri Lanka, according to Minister Alles, stands ready to share its knowledge and experience with partner nations facing similar security challenges.
