COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Ministry of Defense has declared a general amnesty specifically targeting individuals who have absconded from the armed forces.

The amnesty aims to provide an opportunity for deserters to rectify their status and return to legal compliance.

According to official statements, the amnesty period will be in effect from the 20th of April to the 20th of May.

During this window, those who fled from the armed forces and are currently residing in foreign countries will also be granted the opportunity to regularize their status without facing legal repercussions.

Notably, deserters can avail themselves of this opportunity remotely, without the need to physically return to the country.

The amnesty is applicable to all those who deserted the military service until the 2nd of April 2024.
