COLOMBO (News 1st); Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, confirmed the imminent launch of ferry services between Nagapattinam, India, and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka.
Jha expressed optimism that the service will be operational before the end of February 2024.
Regarding the historic Thalaimannar-Rameswaram ferry link, the High Commissioner acknowledged ongoing efforts and expressed hope for a resolution by the end of the year.
However, he highlighted the need for infrastructure development, including jetty repairs, customs and immigration facilities, to ensure smooth border crossings.
Jha emphasized the significance of connectivity as a cornerstone of the India-Sri Lanka partnership and its role in driving economic prosperity for both nations. He pointed to the ongoing land bridge project as another example of connectivity initiatives.
Beyond economic benefits, the High Commissioner envisions the ferry service fostering tourism, hotel development, and new industries, transforming the region into a prosperous hub. He also highlighted the focus on supporting fishing communities, citing its personal importance and past community development projects undertaken in Sri Lanka.
