Today marks the 157th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police Service, an institution that has played a pivotal role in the country's history. The origins of this service trace back to 1795 when the British introduced a policing system to safeguard the warehouses in the Colombo port. However, it wasn't until 1866 that an official police service was established, with Mr. G. W. R. Campbell appointed as its first Inspector General of Police.
In 1947, a significant milestone was achieved when Sir Richard Aluvihare was appointed as the first Sri Lankan Inspector General of Police, marking a turning point in the history of the force.
The Sri Lankan Police have a rich history of service, with exceptional contributions during the thirty years of war in our country and during calamities like the Tsunami.
