COLOMBO (News 1st); An expert group from the European Union is in Sri Lanka to monitor Sri Lanka's response system in the event of maritime disasters.

At the invitation of the Maritime Environment Protection Authority, a 9-member expert group from the EU arrived in Sri Lanka to commence monitoring Sri Lanka's current response methods in the event of a maritime disaster.

The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance maritime disaster response methods and raise awareness regarding them following the completion of the monitoring process.

The expert group is currently engaged in discussions with government agencies responsible for coordinating responses to maritime disasters. They recently conducted on-site inspections at relevant facilities of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

The Marine Environment Protection Authority said that due to the absence of proper technical expertise, Sri Lanka's sea area was negatively impacted following the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.
