Two arrested for illegally smuggling gold jewellery worth Rs. 280 million

COLOMBO(News 1st): Two suspects who illegally smuggled stock of jewellery weighing one kilogram and 780 grams into Sri Lanka have been arrested by the Police Narcotics Division in Katunayake.

Sri Lanka Police said the arrested were residents of Wellampititya and Grandpass aged 39 and 52 respectively.

They had arrived at Katunayake Airport from Chennai, India.

The value of the seized gold is approximately Rs. 280 Million.

Meanwhile, a woman who tried to smuggle 814 grams of gold out of the country has been arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau at Katunayake Airport.

Sri Lanka police say that the arrested was a 38-year-old. 

The arrested suspect had tried to smuggle 814 grams of gold out of the country illegally by converting it into liquid gold.
