Bill related to local government instituions gazetted

COLOMBO (News 1st); A Private Member's Bill by SLPP MP Jayantha Ketagoda has been gazetted to amend three Acts in order to give the subject Minister powers to re-form the local government authorities that were dissolved.

This bill amends several clauses including in the Municipal Council Ordinance, Municipal Council Amendment Act and Local Authorities Act.

The Bill was gazetted on June 26.

Even though the Government called for nominations, the local government elections have been contionously postponed.

The term of Local Government bodies ended in March 2023. These include Municipal Council, Local councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas.

These councils have been running even though their tenure has been expired.

A gazette was also issued announcing a draft bill containing proposed laws regarding making defamatory comments over a court, judicial court or an institution.

The bill was gazetted by the Minister of Justice.
