Bolts on main pipeline removed, leading to major leak

COLOMBO (News 1st); The National Water Supply and Drainage Board said the reason for the major leak on the main transmission line was the removal of the bolts that keeps the pipes together.

Anuruddha Perera, the Assistant General Manager at the NWSDB told News 1st that it is believed that a group that came along the Diyawanna Oya had committed this act leading to a major leak, and disruption of the water supply.

He said around 60 bolts are used to keep the pipes together, and more than 40 them were removed.

The Assistant General Manager said that an investigation is underway, led by the security forces. 

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board said that the Water supply will be interrupted in Kotte & Kaduwela MC areas, Maharagama & Boaralesgamuwa UC areas, Colombo 04,05,07 & 08 till 9.00 pm on Friday (28).

This is due to breakdown of transmission pipeline from Ambatale treatment plant.

A major leak was reported on Thursday (27) night on the main transmission pipeline that leads to the Jubilee Post Water Tank in Kotte. The leak was reported close to the Polduwa Bridge.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board said that a certain group had removed the bolts that keep the pipeline with a diameter of 1,100 mm intact.
