Colombo (News 1st) - The Mumbai High Court has directed the Government of India to respond to a legal challenge to its draconian Information Technology Rules on social media, by comedian Kunal Kamra, Indian media reported.
Government rules penalise any social media platform that a government-appointed department may find to be "fake, false or misleading".
The next hearing is scheduled for April 21.
Justice G.S. Patel observed that “There may be many interpretations of a certain thing or statement but that doesn’t make it false or fake”.
Kamra has petitioned that the rules “constitute unreasonable restrictions to freedom of speech and expression” and also restrict his “fundamental right to practice trade or profession” as he is a comedian who relies heavily on social media.
The IT rules have been heavily criticised by Indian media and free speech advocates.
