COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Health said 1,250 leprosy cases have been reported in Sri Lanka over the past 10 months.

Director of the Anti Leprosy Campaign Dr. Prasad Ranaweera said the cases include 131 children under 14 years of age.

He said 256 cases have been reported from the Colombo district, 138 from the Gamapaha district, 128 from Batticaloa, and 92 from the Kalutara district.

Dr. Ranaweera added that nearly 50 percent of the leprosy cases reported in Sri Lanka this year were from the Western Province and the Batticaloa district.

He said the patients being reported at present are those infected with the leprosy bacteria 5 or 7 years ago.

After being infected with the leprosy bacteria, Dr. Ranaweera said it takes several years for patients to identify the symptoms.
