Extreme Weather: Heavy rains expected in Southern Province

Colombo (News 1st) - Extreme Weather: Heavy rains of over 100mm are expected within next 24 hours in the Southern Province, according to the Met. Dept.

As the Nilwala River is already at a considerably high flood level there is a high risk of overtopping the flood protection bunds at some locations. Accordingly, the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley belonging to Matara, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Athuraliya and Akurassa Divisional Secretariats have been threatened with a Major Flood Situation.

The residents of the area and drivers of the vehicles running through those areas are requested to pay high attention in this regard in order to save valuable lives and public and private properties.

The Disaster Management Authorities and District/Divisional Administrations have been requested to take necessary precautions in this regards
