Serious challenge to issue medicine due to pharmacists shortage

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Society of Government Pharmacists (SGP) said serious challenges have arisen in issuing medicines in some hospitals due to the shortage of pharmacists.

SGP Chairman Thushara Ranadeva said it has become a severe issue in regional hospitals.

He said other officials attempt to carry out the duties of pharmacists, due to the shortage, which poses a risk to patients.

He said many pharmacists looking for jobs overseas due to the prevailing economic issues, has further intensified the crisis.

When inquired by News 1st a senior official of the Ministry of Health said a request was made to receive approval from the Ministry of Finance, to fill the vacancies for pharmacists.
