COLOMBO (News 1st); In one of the most hostile and demanding operational theaters in the world, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Aviation Unit has etched another legendary chapter in international peacekeeping.
Operating under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), SLAF "Air Warriors" successfully executed a high-risk hostage rescue operation on 19 October 2026, delivering freedom to three civilians who had endured more than eight grueling months in captivity.
The operation was nothing short of a textbook study in multi-layered military coordination. Recognizing the extreme volatility of the environment and the grave risks facing the captives, the Sri Lanka Air Force deployed a formidable, synchronized task force:
Aerial Might: Three robust Mi-17 transport helicopters spearheaded the mission, navigating treacherous topography and volatile airspace.
Specialized Assets: Highly trained combat personnel, a dedicated tactical negotiation team, and an advanced Air Medical Evacuation Team (Air Medevac) were embedded to ensure immediate response capability and medical triage on the ground.
Endurance: Pushing crew and machinery to their limits, the mission logged over 18 cumulative flight hours in direct support of the high-stakes rescue.
For over eight months, the three civilian hostages lived under the constant shadow of uncertainty. Thanks to the unwavering professionalism, precision, and tactical discipline of the Sri Lankan peacekeepers, that nightmare finally ended.
This triumphant operation serves as a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by global peacekeepers. Far from home, operating in austere conditions, the Sri Lanka Air Force Aviation Unit has once again reaffirmed its sacred creed: Proudly serving. Courageously protecting. Bringing hope through the skies.
